Since the beginning of 2020, when COVID-19 first began to spread around the world, it has completely disrupted our daily lives. We’ve worked and schooled from home, restricted or eliminated contact with loved ones, canceled important events and celebrations, and decreased or even eliminated travel.

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has resulted in economic and social lockdowns in most countries all over the globe. Early identification of infected individuals is regarded as one of the most important prerequisites for fighting the pandemic and for returning to a ‘New Normal’. Large-scale testing is therefore crucial.

As we continue to debate the effectiveness of lockdowns on curbing the spread of the virus, what we can all agree on is that it’s time to get back to work. The restrictions have sent economies into recession, and only a timely “Get back to work” strategy can help to save it.

A Lancet study back in September found that with effective testing and contact tracing, we could effectively get back to work, get schools opened again, resume travel, and remain relatively safe while at it.

Although social distancing is still one of the best way to prevent the spread of COVID- 19, that strategy is impossible in institutional settings such as airports, schools, and large businesses. Where large groups of people must gather, early identification of infection through large-scale, rigorous testing for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is the best way to control the spread of this terrible disease and help us become comfortable with that new normal.
